MEGAN WAS THE only witness to what happened the night Alicia crashed her car. And she had avoided me at the party the other night. But, most importantly, maybe she knew what her father had been up to in the weeks leading up to his death. I decided to check in with her.

Megan wasn’t answering the phone number I had for her and didn’t answer any of my texts. I swung by her place in Hollywood, but she wasn’t home. Alicia hadn’t heard from her either. So I tried one last option.

Turns out Uncle Barry made Megan get a job and she had found one at a little vintage clothing shop on Melrose. He did seem the type to put his rich kid to work to “learn something about the world.” Yeah, to learn that her father was a dick.

R.I.P., Uncle Barry.

Maybe she’d be at work. People have mourned in stranger ways.

It was almost noon and the place wasn’t open yet. How these places keep these hours and stay open, I’ll never know. I was hanging out front, leaving another message for Gordon — did he fall into a hole? Should I be worried? — when I spotted Megan walking down Melrose. She wore a plum-colored dress, like something out a 1950s cocktail party, with a small black purse slung over her shoulder. She was holding her phone in the air and talking into it.

She arrived at the store, still talking into the phone. She looked like she hadn’t slept much. “And this,” she said as she pointed to the store, “is where I work. My father...” She paused and took a breath. “He thought it was important that I learn first hand a strong work ethic.”

Nailed it.

She kept talking into her phone, and I wondered if she was livestreaming.

Megan spotted me and her eyes widened. “Everyone, it can only happen in Hollywood. I have just run into a celebrity — ”

It almost never happens.

She pivoted and stood next to me. “Jimmy, can you say hello to my fans?” She managed a smile.

I began to recoil, muttering a “hello.” On the phone was a fun house mirror of me and Megan, with tons of little hearts and laugh emojis bubbling up from the bottom corner of the screen. She really was livestreaming. Yeah, people grieve in strange ways.

Megan said, “And Jimmy Cooper, ace detective, who is your style mentor?”

Thankfully, before I could truly embarrass myself with a terrible answer, a sour voice interrupted us. “Megan.”

Standing at the door with keys in her hand was an African American woman in her mid-twenties. She had a round face and black hair with red highlights dripping past her shoulders. She wore a trendy mix of vintage and new, and her fingers were covered in silver rings. “I’ve told you about this.”

Tears welled in Megan’s eyes. “I’m sharing with my fans about my dad, Naomi. I thought you would be cool about this?”

Unlocking the door, Naomi said, “First: Turn it off. We’ve talked about this.
